Of course the people running the government knew better. The average person off the street would have known that the actions they took would logically have resulted in this mess. Are we to believe that these high-ranking political and military officials couldn't see it coming? With access to an unimaginable wealth of intelligence, money, and resources, you can bet they knew exactly what they were doing.
That's why the appropriate word to use is "treason." Treason is the intentional, willful betrayal of one's own country by either waging war against it or materially aiding its enemies. And materially aiding America's enemies is precisely what the government is guilty of.
The question is: What's the endgame? Why did they bungle this withdrawal? What are they trying to achieve with the resultant crisis?
One of the most important things to look at is the behavior of the media. The narrative they create is one of the biggest clues about the direction in which they want to lead the public.
